Before carving the neck profile, the side dots need to be installed. I was planning to drill holes and fill them with rosewood dust and CA glue, but when I tested that it turned out almost black... might as well just use black dots!

The first step is to rough in both ends with a rasp.

Next I need to sharpen the blade on my utility plane. The whetstone I have is the same one my Dad used when I was a little boy and he would sharpen the knives in our tackle boxes.

A sharp plane (even a cheap one!) is a wonderful thing.

After a whole lot of planing, I shape the heel on the spindle sander.

...and the volute as well.

I work my way through 100, 220 and 320 grit sandpaper. I'm still shaping with 100 grit, then 220, 320 (and 420 just before applying finish) are for clean up. Here it is after 320 and wiping it down with mineral spirits.

As with most all of my necks, this one will be getting several coats of gunstock oil as a finish.

Walnut is one of my favourite neck materials. It has nice weight, looks beautiful and sounds fantastic.
