Recessing the controls into the top adds a classy touch. To do that I use the router top carving jig again. This time I get the jig in place before attaching the router so i can perfectly line up the location of the control with where the router bit will eventually be.
Three quick plunges with the router and the recesses are roughed in. With such a large router bit I get a little burning no matter how sharp the bit is. They look a little ugly, but they need to be rounded over so we can take care of the burn marks at the same time.
Depending on the location of each control, the depth of the recess appears slightly different due to the top carve.
The pickup selector switch has a shorter shaft than the volume and tone pots. This requires cutting some extra clearance from inside the control cavity. I do this on the drill press.
Next the recess areas are smoothed nicely into the top carve using sandpaper.
The grain pattern and colours can play tricks on your eyes. Its sometimes hard to tell them apart from sanding scratches!
A quick test to make sure everything fits properly.
