I saved a scrap from the book matched quilted maple top to do some colour testing with. The shoebox holds my collection of water based dyes that I'll mix and match to come up with a nice colour. Maybe a deep green?
There are many ways to apply colour to a figured top. Some prefer not to colour the wood directly at all. That method requires sealing the wood with a clear product, then spraying various colour layers on top of that. I've used that method many times, but this time out I'm still experimenting with colouring the wood directly (something I was testing with this guitar). Direct staining of the wood allows you to do interesting things like dye the wood one colour, sand most of the colour off, and then stain with another complimentary colour. In this case, I've stained the test piece jet black.
After the black had thoroughly dried, I sanded most of it off. The fun part comes next!
I mixed up some bright green dye with a single drop of black to get a deep green colour, and then applied that to the sample piece. I think its has a really great turtle-shell like appearance. Oh yes, this guitar shall be green!
