The first step in finishing the top is sanding. A lot of sanding. Quite often I will just seal the top and spray the colour coats over that, but I recently started dabbling in applying colour directly to the wood. Before you do this you need to sand through many grades of sandpaper, wiping the top with a damp cloth between grits. After that, I applied a black dye.

Once the black dye was completely dry, and sanded most of it off and applied a strong green dye.

I could have stopped where I was and shot the clear coats, but I wanted to try to get even more depth to pop out of the bookmatched quilted maple top. To do that, I sanded off some of the green dye I had just put on.

And finally, I sprayed a coat of transparent green. Its hard to capture the colour at this point (at least with my camera, in my shop, with my photography skills). This picture doesn't do it justice, but it really looks great in person.
