Since the headstock is quilted maple (cut from the same bookmatched top set as the body) it gets finished using the same method as the top. There are just a few extra steps because of the inlay. Here it is before any finishing had been done.

...and here it is after having a coat of black dye (sanded back) and a coat of green dye, also sanded back. You can also see a roll of frisket and a sharp knife that I'll be needing in the next step.

Frisket is a masking material that will be used to cover the mother of pearl inlay so that when I spray the tinted green colour coats it won't cover my logo. Here I've cut off a rectangular piece of frisket that will completely cover the inlay.

The frisket peels away from the backing and is stuck down on the logo. I use my finger nail to make sure its really adhered to the inlay area. From this point on taking pictures is difficult becasue the frisket is highly reflective!

In this picture I've started the slow process of cutting around the outline of the inlay using the utility knife. I've peeled away some of the excess frisket already. You can't really see the part that's left on the inlay, but trust me, its there.

After 20 minutes or so of precise surgery, the frisket is completely cut to shape. The next step is spray the colour coats.

After a couple of coats of colour you can see what the headstock would look like if I didn't mask off the inlay.

Part of the way through peeling off the frisket. After its all been removed, there might be the odd place that needs a little scrape with the utility knife depending on how accurate you were with your tracing.

Ready for clear coats!
