The top and back of this guitar are flamed spalted maple and the core is mahogany. I've had the mahogany for quite a while, but I glued it up expecting to only put a figured top on it. Since I'm using a top and back, the mahogany is too thick. The blank is too wide for my thickness planer, so I need to cut it in half, plane it down a quarter of an inch then glue it back up.
Here it is cut, planed and re-glued.
I made these clamping cauls out of oak to keep the two halves of body blanks from slipping while the glue is wet. I usually don't have to do anything except sand off the glue line.
While the core is clamped, I glued up one of the spalt sets. What you can't see here is that there's a strip of masking tape running along the seam on the underside that's providing the clamping force.
Here's the body core and the back after both have been run through the drum sander.
I need to build a proper press! This will have to do in the mean time. Notice the drill bit in the corner (there's one in the opposite corner too) to keep the back from sliding around while the glue dries.
