Last week while I was at the lumber yard I saw they had a nice piece of pine so I decided to pick it up even though I didn't really have an immediate need. This seems like a good time to use it. Pine is kind of in keeping with the retro theme. Here's the blank (after I cut and glued it up) with the template transferred onto it.
Here it is after a trip to the bandsaw.
If you recall, I didn't make router templates for this one becasue its a prototype. If I like the end result, I'll make a set of templates. In this case, I use the edge sander to clean up the edges. Now I need to run it through the drum sander to remove the glue lines. That means I am going to lose my center line. In this case its also the line where the halves were joined which is pretty visible, but on some woods its not, so I usually transfer the center line down the edge at the top and bottom.
It didn't need much to clean up the glue line. As you can just barely see, it didn't even take all of the pencil line off near the bottom. If I run my fingers over it, I can't find any trace of the seam. Drum sanders can be fine adjusted so that it takes multiple passes to remove a pencil line!
I redraw the center line and the neck pocket, then rough out the neck pocket on the drill press.
Here's the neck pocket template in place.
And here's the pocket after routing. As you can see the lower side is a little ragged. Normally that side would end a little lower, but since I was shaping using the edge sander I didn't want to eat into the neck pocket area.
All it take is a little work with a blade and some sandpaper to clean it up.
Now its time to test the neck fit. Here are a few shots from different angles.
Its starting to look like a guitar...
